Organic is the new black: Albet i Noya

A few days before our visit to Albet i Noya, a friend of mine told me that she visited this winery a few years ago, in 2005, and back then she was totally baffled by the concept of “organic wine”  (find out more about organic wine here)🍷. From the people who did the visit with her, no one knew exactly the meaning of the word 🤷🏼‍♀️.

Back in 2005, the concept “organic” was familiar to only a bunch of green enthusiasts who wanted to be trendy (or that’s what everyone thought). Albet i Noya was among them producing high-quality Catalan organic wine at full speed 🚀.

In fact, Albet i Noya started to make wine organically in the seventies, specifically for the Danish market (these Danes know good wine!🇩🇰) so it was one of the first cellars in Spain to produce this kind of wine🍃. Right now, organic doesn’t surprise us anymore but this winery keeps trying to do so by experimenting with forgotten Catalan native varieties.

Pre-phylloxera vines: new ecological wine 👩🏻‍🔬

One of Albet i Noya’s latest projects is retrieving Catalan indigenous varieties which disappeared due to phylloxera 🐝. They are currently researching 🔬 them but some of the varieties are already on the market and trying them is one of the most interesting (and tasty) experiences ever! The story behind their names is really captivating since no one knows what they used to be called. For example, one of the two white indigenous grapes is called Marina Rión in honour of the late grandmother of Josep Maria Albet (cellar’s owner). 🔎

It’s difficult to classify their wine range because it’s really huge. Albet i Noya produces both sparkling wine (under DO Penedès) and wine. Here some of their products I loved the most:

 

  1. Curiós: you have a Curiós for any occasion because it comes in red, white and rosé (also mentioned in this blog) so it’s a very handy wine. 👩🏼‍🎤
  2. Efecte: one of the newest releases. A superb mix of traditional Cava varieties (Macabeu, Parellada, Xarel·lo) plus Chardonnay. 🍇
  3. Rión: made from the indigenous grape Marina Rión, it is my favourite! 🌟
  4. 3 Macabeus: this wine plays with 3 different old Macabeu parcels to create a perfect Macabeu-mix! I highly recommend it if you want to discover new whites. 🔝
